#1: Meridian High Football

Our countdown of the top sports stories of 2008 concludes today, and it comes as no surprise which story checks in at the top. The Meridian High football team won their first state championship in 18 years earlier this month, and they did it by beating a South Panola team that was riding an 89 game winning streak.

The two headliners all year for the Cats were head coach Larry Weems, who's steady demeanor guided MHS through a season full of possible pitfalls, and Tyler Russell, who's leadership at the quarterback position was unmatched anywhere in the state.
