Mark Gottfried has quit as basketball coach at Alabama.
The school said Monday he resigned and assistant Phillip Pearson will take over immediately as interim head coach.
Gottfried was in his 11th year at Alabama. The Tide's record this year is 12-7, including 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference. Gottfried's teams have missed the NCAA tournament the last two years.
The coach has been criticized over the recent departure of star guard Ronald Steele, who skipped the end of his senior season. The school cited an injury, but Steele said there was more to his decision than that.
