As the prep fastpitch softball season nears, one area team is without their leader. Wayne County head coach Carolyn Patterson has been suspended for the season as a result of an investigation by the Mississippi High School Activities Association regarding illegal recruiting contact with a Quitman player.

Quitman Athletic Director Steve Hampton told Newscenter 11 that the possible violation by Patterson was brought to their attention at the beginning of January, and that the MHSAA was then notified by the school.

The MHSAA recommended a half season suspension for Patterson, but Wayne County Superintendent Robert Dean upped the suspension to a full season. The War Eagles will be led by assistant coach Nicole Jones in 2009.

Just for everyone's information. This news article fails to address the fact that Coach Patterson was denied the chance to present her side to anyone involved in the entire suspension process. Nobody from the MHSAA, the Wayne County School District nor the Superintendent's office gave Coach Patterson a chance to address the charges. They also fail to mention that the girl from Quitman arranged the meeting with Coach Patterson through a friend of hers. Also, the girl is a senior and would not be eligible to play for Wayne County without sitting out a year, a fact which Coach Patterson is keenly aware. Everyone, even those who feel she did wrong and should be punished, should speak out for her right to at least be HEARD!

Mike, NO CHILD should be put in that position, you are right. Where were the parents? They know right from wrong and they let this go on with their child.

I'm not from either school but if recruiting did go on, she should be suspended. And to hear thats not the first time a player from Quitman has been recruited from Wayne County is sad to hear because no kid should be put in the position.

This is not the first time that Quitman players have been recruited by Wayne County.
