The East Mississippi Community College Lady Lions held Southwest Mississippi Community College without a field goal for almost five minutes in the game’s final six minutes and knocked off the Lady Bears, 67-58 here Monday afternoon at Bobcat Gymnasium in the opening game of the MACJC Basketball Tournament.
EMCC, the top seed in the North, improves to 21-4 and will face the Jones County Junior College vs. Northwest Mississippi Community College winner at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Southwest, the No. 4 seed from the South, falls to 14-9. However, the Lady Bears could still play in the Region 23 Tournament next week at Mississippi College.
Martika Hull led the Lady Lions with 17 points, while Kottia White added 14. Brittani Jones had 10 points and 10 rebounds for EMCC.
Southwest used a 2-3 zone to keep the game at their pace for the first half. A Tessa Trippi basket with around 3:00 left gave the Lady Bears their longest lead of the night at 25-17. EMCC trimmed the lead to 28-27 at halftime.
The Lady Lions came out quickly in the second half and took control. A 3-pointer from the top of the key by Sanitra Bush gave EMCC the lead for good at 37-34 with 14:20 left.
