Lady Warriors Set to Defend Region Title

East Central Community College’s Lady Warriors will battle the nationally-ranked Copiah-Lincoln Community College women Tuesday, March 3 in first-round action of the Region 23 Tournament being held at A. E. Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus in Clinton.

The No. 6 seed Lady Warriors, led by fourth-year head coach Bill Smith, are the defending Region 23 champs and bring a 17-9 overall mark to the four-day event, which gets under way Monday with men’s competition.

The East Central women are aiming for their first season win against the second-seed Lady Wolves, who are 24-3 and finished runners-up to Jones County Thursday in the MACJC State Tournament held on the JCJC campus. Co-Lin is ranked ninth in the latest NJCAA poll.

The Lady Warriors fell 74-69 to Itawamba during the opening round of the state tournament. East Central’s losses to Co-Lin during 2008-09 were by scores of 76-71 and 66-54.

Other first-round women matchups scheduled Tuesday in the Region 23 Tournament include No. 5 Northwest vs. No. 3 East Mississippi at noon, No. 1 seed Jones County vs. No. 7 Southwest at 2 p.m., and No. 4 Itawamba vs. Louisiana/Independent Meridian at 8 p.m.

Semi-finals are scheduled at 6 and 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Finals are 6 p.m. Thursday.
