SCOOBA, Miss. – Set to make their first appearance in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship since 1978, the Lady Lions of East Mississippi Community College will be seeded 12th in next week’s (March 17-21) national tournament set to be played in Salina, Kan. The pairings for the 16-team tournament were announced Wednesday by the NJCAA office headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo.

On the heels of claiming the NJCAA Region 23 championship last week in Clinton, Miss., head coach Sharon Thompson’s 24-5 EMCC Lady Lions will take on fifth-seeded Walters State Community College at noon CT on Wednesday, March 18, at the 7,000-seat Bicentennial Center in Salina.

The five-day tournament will be played using a false double-elimination format. The winner of Wednesday’s EMCC-WSCC contest will advance to meet the first-round winner between Chipola, Fla. (#4 seed) and Sheridan, Wyo. (#13 seed) on Thursday (March 19) at 8 p.m. CT. The losers of the two opening-round games pitting the same four teams will face other on Thursday at 2 p.m. CT.

From Morristown, Tenn., the Lady Senators of Walters State will enter next week’s NJCAA tournament sporting a perfect 30-0 record after claiming the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII championship in Cleveland, Tenn. Guided by head coach Dave Kragel, Walters State will be making its third consecutive appearance in the national tournament and fourth trip in the last five years. The Lady Senators were ranked third nationally in the final regular-season NJCAA Division I women’s basketball poll.

East Mississippi’s last appearance in the NJCAA women’s basketball tournament came in 1978 when the EMJC Lionettes, under the guidance of current Pearl River Community College athletic director/men’s basketball coach Richard Mathis, went 31-0 before falling in the national championship game to Panola (Texas) Junior College.
