JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi State will play Washington on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Mississippi State (23-12) is the 13th seed in the West Region in the pairings announced Sunday. If the Bulldogs upset the No. 4 seed Washington Huskies (25-8) in Portland, Ore., they would face the winner of Purdue-Northern Iowa.
Mississippi State needed a strong run in the Southeastern Conference tournament to have any chance of being considered for the NCAA field. The No. 3 West seeded Bulldogs did one better, picking up the SEC's automatic bid by knocking off East No. 1 seed Tennessee 64-61.
MSU beat Oregon last year in the first round of the NCAA tournament before losing to Memphis. The Bulldogs are making their sixth NCAA tournament appearance under Rick Stansbury.
