Southern Miss basketball coach Larry Eustachy is like most Americans in these trying times: He believes bonuses should be earned.
So he returned $25,000 he was due this year. The reasons were simple: Times are tough and wins were tough to come by.
Eustachy compares his decision to those being made by the giant corporations being bailed out by the government. Why would he accept a bonus when his team took a step back from 20- and 19-win seasons the past two years to finish at 15-17.
Injuries, academic troubles and bad luck left Eustachy with just seven scholarship players this year. And while the effort was there, the results were not, he feels.
Southern Miss athletic director Richard Giannini has never had a coach return a bonus before.
