(Jackson, MS) – Two Mississippi State Bulldogs, Jarvis Varnado and Alexis Rack, were named Mississippi's top college basketball players tonight at the combined Cellular South Howell and Cellular South Gillom Trophy presentations held at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson.
Varnado, a Junior center at Mississippi State University, was the choice over two Ole Miss players, David Huertas and Terrico White, to claim the men's honor. Varnado is a native of Brownsville, TN. Alexis Rack, a Junior guard at MSU, outscored Pauline Love of USM and Bianca Thomas of Ole Miss, to be honored with the Cellular South Gillom Trophy. Rack is a native of Franklin, LA. Thirty-nine media representatives from across Mississippi affiliated with radio, television and print outlets in small, medium and large markets determine the Cellular South Howell and Cellular South Gillom Trophy recipients.
With more than 28,000 votes text messaged in the Cellular South Fans’ Choice Awards, Jarvis Varnado of MSU was selected by voters, while Pauline Love of USM was the fans’ choice on the ladies side. In addition to a trophy, Cellular South will donate $2,500 to the Mississippi State University athletic department and University of Southern Mississippi athletic department.
This is the 12th year for the Cellular South Outstanding Player Awards. Cellular South has served as title sponsor for ten of those years. Awards presented each year include: the Cellular South Conerly Trophy in college football, the Cellular South Howell Trophy in men’s college basketball, the Cellular South Gillom Trophy in women’s college basketball, and the Ferriss Trophy in men’s college baseball.
