OXFORD, Miss. (AP) -- Funeral services for Mississippi football great Preston P. "Pep" Bennett will be held Friday morning in Clarksdale.
The school said Bennett died Tuesday night at his home in Clarksdale after a long illness.
The quarterback's college career was interrupted in 1941 when he enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He returned to Ole Miss and the football team when he was discharged in 1946.
After graduation, Bennett returned to his hometown of Meridian to coach and served as a Southeastern Conference official for five years. He moved to Clarksdale in 1950 to become a farmer.
The M-Club Athletic Hall of Fame member's funeral will be held at First Methodist Church and his burial will be at Oakridge Cemetery.
