HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Southern Mississippi's baseball team is looking for its fourth straight win over Mississippi State today. The Golden Eagles have never beaten Mississippi State in four consecutive games. Southern Miss handled Mississippi State twice in Hattiesburg last season and beat the Bulldogs 10-7 in Pearl on March 17. Mississippi State holds a 71-35 all-time advantage in the series.
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) -- Ole Miss defensive tackle Jerrell Powe appears to have finally got a handle on his weight. He was up to about 380 pounds at his heaviest a year ago and played last season at a 350 pounds. Though he remains quite hefty, Powe is down to about 330 pounds this spring and his added agility has been noticeable during spring workouts. Powe says he's a lot quicker, but he still has some improving to do.
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) -- Ole Miss put together three straight scoring innings to open the game and hung on to defeat New Orleans 5-4 last night. The Rebels extended their winning streak to seven games. Ole Miss starter Nathan Baker (2-0) pitched five no-hit innings before failing to survive the sixth, when he gave up three runs and five hits. Jake Morgan picked up his third save by pitching the ninth, allowing one run and two hits.
HOOVER, Ala. (AP) -- Mississippi State celebrated the return of Ricky Bowen to the pitcher's mound with an impressive 10-0 road shutout over UAB yesterday. The Bulldogs moved to 17-15 while running their win streak in the series with the Blazers (16-14) to 15 straight. Bowen, a junior right-hander, has been sidelined recently due to control problems. His start Tuesday was his first since a start against Southern Miss on March 17.
