MERIDIAN, MS.-The state’s premier amateur sporting event---the State Games of Mississippi--- will be spread over all four weekends in June, with competition not only in Meridian and Lauderdale County, but also in Neshoba, Newton, Rankin, Lowndes, Hancock and Madison counties. The event kicks off with the Olympic-style Opening Ceremonies sponsored by AT&T Mississippi. It will be held Friday, June 19, at Dumont Plaza in Downtown Meridian and features the Parade of Athletes, the torch lighting and fireworks. In 2008, Meridian was host to over 4,600 athletes competing in 28 sports from over 300 communities throughout the state of Mississippi. The State Games of Mississippi is open to all amateur athletes. Participant’s age categories vary with each sport and all participants must be Mississippi residents for at least 30 days prior to the first day of competition in their sport. Participants in the past years have ranged in age from 4 to 92.

The inaugural State Games of Mississippi was held in Meridian in 1992 and drew 1,800 athletes competing in 11 sports. The idea was spawned by Meridian’s local tourism. Since 1992, over 50,000 of Mississippi’s finest amateur athletes have competed in State Games of Mississippi competitions statewide. The birth of the State Games of Mississippi elevated the spirit of amateur athletics in Mississippi. The State Games of Mississippi has encouraged participation for all Mississippians by creating new sport opportunities and by serving as educator and cheerleader to sports newcomers. The event provides the social atmosphere for heightened interest in sports, uplifted family values and increased community pride. The State Games of Mississippi is a non-for-profit organization and is primarily funded through sponsorships and contributions. The entire community lends a hand during the Games with more than 450 volunteers making the event a success.
