MERIDIAN – Four State Games of Mississippi sporting events will be held this weekend to kick off the 2009 amateur sports festival. 29 events will be spread over all four weekends in June, with competition not only in Meridian and Lauderdale County, but also in Neshoba, Newton, Rankin, Lowndes, Hancock and Madison counties.
The U-10 and U-12 Soccer District Competition for the 2009 State Games of Mississip pi will be held June 6-7, 2009, in a Northern, Western, Central and Southern location. Of the State Games of Mississippi’s 29 sporting events, youth soccer is the largest event with more than 1,800 participants. The top four teams will be taken from each of the four qualifying districts, for a maximum of 16 teams, in the Under 10 and Under 12 divisions. Athletes will contend at the following locations in hopes of securing a spot for the final competition held in Meridian:
· North District: Starkville Sportsplex
· Central District: Brandon’s Exchange Club Fields and Crossgates
· South District: Hattiesburg’s Tatum Park
· Western District – Greenwood’s Stribling Park
Adult Basketball will be held at Meridian Community College’s gymnasium on Saturday, June 6h. This event is open to male 18 and over teams from across the state to compete in a 5 on 5 playing format.
For the second year, Judo competition will take place in Columbus at the Emma Ody Pohl Gym. This event is open to men and women in all age divisions.
Cross Country made its debut last year in the State Games of Mississippi sporting event line-up. The event will be held at the Okatibbee Cross Country Course, East Bank Dam area off of Highway 19 North from Meridian, on Saturday, June 6. All events may be entered by teams or by
