UM Mascot Search on Hold

The University of Mississippi's effort to develop a new look for its mascot was placed on hold Tuesday when the Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics said it was not comfortable with the three finalists selected in a nationwide contest.

"The committee considered more than 300 entries and selected three," said committee chairman and law school professor Robert Weems. "We then asked the artists to make modifications to their designs, but after reviewing the changes, the group still was not enthusiastic about any of the three."

The three images were each human figures representing young, muscular male characters. Weems said the group did not want to release the designs to the public unless IT could enthusiastically endorse them.

The university had planned to make the three images available in an online poll later this week, asking students, faculty, staff, alumni and athletic boosters to vote for their favorite. The poll has been cancelled.

Athletics department officials said they will meet in the next few weeks to decide what steps to take next.
