STARKVILLE - Following a long scrimmage and team conditioning, Mississippi State head football coach helped his team forget about the hot weather by announcing Emmanuel Gatling and John McMillan were placed on full athletic scholarship.

"Those are two guys that do everything we ask and do it all as best they can," Mullen said. "Those types of guys will help us be a better football team."

Prior to the head coach's announcement, he put the Bulldogs through their first full-scrimmage test of the preseason. And he was pleased with some of the things he saw, especially consistency on the defensive side of the ball.

"Overall, I'd say the defense probably did a little better than the offense," Mullen said. "They were much more consistent throughout the day."

That's not to say the offense didn't have its moments, though. The head coach praised sophomore running back Robert Elliott and freshman wide receiver Chad Bumphis for their speed, which each utilized to make big plays during the full-contact workout.
