LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- The Philadelphia Eagles were shut out in the second half of Monday's game at Washington, but the outcome was in the bag by halftime.
DeSean Jackson scored two long touchdowns and Will Witherspoon returned an interception for a TD as the Eagles whipped the Redskins 27-17.
Jackson opened the scoring with a 67-yard run on a reverse early in the first quarter, moments before Witherspoon rumbled nine yards into the end zone to make it 14-0.
Donovan McNabb later connected with Jackson for a 57-yard touchdown that put the Eagles up 27-7 in the second period. It was the 200th scoring pass of McNabb's career.
McNabb was 15 of 25 for 156 yards and no interceptions as the Eagles improved to 4-and-2.
The 2-and-5 Redskins still haven't scored more than 17 points in a game this season. Quarterback Jason Campbell was 29 of 43 for 284 yards and two touchdowns, but he also lost one of his two fumbles and tossed his seventh interception of the season.
The win gives the Eagles a chance to grab at least a share of the NFC East lead if they beat the New York Giants in Philadelphia on Sunday.
Philly ended the game without Brian Westbrook, who suffered a concussion in the first quarter.
NFL-NEWS
Ware gets extension...Edwards charged...49ers make a QB change
UNDATED (AP) -- DeMarcus Ware has emerged as the top defensive player on the Dallas Cowboys. The team has made sure the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker doesn't become a free agent after this season.
Ware and the Cowboys have worked out a six-year contract extension that runs through 2015. The deal is worth $78 million, $40 million of which is guaranteed.
The 27-year-old Ware has recorded 57 1-2 sacks while starting all 70 of his regular-season games.
In other NFL news:
-- New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards has been charged with misdemeanor assault over accusations he punched a friend of LeBron James' outside a Cleveland nightclub earlier this month. The charge was filed Monday by Cleveland city prosecutor Victor Perez and carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
-- The Jets also have placed running back/kick returner Leon Washington on injured reserve, thus ending his season. Washington suffered a broken right leg in Sunday's 38-0 win at Oakland.
-- San Francisco coach Mike Singletary has changed starting quarterbacks, giving the job back to former first-overall draft pick Alex Smith. He replaces Shaun Hill, who was benched at halftime of Sunday's 24-21 loss at Houston. Smith looked good in his first game in nearly two years, completing his first six passes and finishing 15 of 22 for 206 yards and three touchdown passes to tight end Vernon Davis.
-- Backup Buffalo quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will make his second straight start this weekend while Trent Edwards continues to recover from a concussion. Fitzpatrick was a winner in his first NFL start Sunday, helping the Bills beat Carolina 20-9.
-- Houston receiver Andre Johnson has a bruised lung and is listed as day to day as the Texans prepare for the Buffalo Bills. Johnson was injured when he took a hit in the lower back in the second quarter of Houston's 24-21 win over the 49ers.
MLB-CARDINALS
McGwire hired as Cards coach, La Russa returning
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Mark McGwire is returning to baseball as hitting coach under St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. The Cardinals said Monday that La Russa had agreed to a one-year contract for a 15th season as manager and that McGwire will replace Hal McRae. Pitching coach Dave Duncan will also be back.
McGwire hit a then-record 70 home runs in 1998 and retired with 583 homers in 2001. He famously refused to answer questions about steroids use during a congressional hearing, saying he wasn't there to talk about the past. He has received little support from voters for the Hall of Fame.
MLB-INDIANS/ACTA
Tribe introduces Acta as skipper
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Manny Acta has been introduced as the new manager of the Cleveland Indians. Acta received a three-year pact after going 158-and-252 in 2 1-2 years as the Washington Nationals' skipper.
He becomes the Indians 40th manager, four months after being dismissed by the Nats.
MLB-WORLD SERIES
Yankees to face Phillies
NEW YORK (AP) -- The 2009 World Series begins Wednesday night in New York as the Yankees entertain Philadelphia. The Phillies advanced last week by eliminating the L.A. Dodgers in a five-game NLCS. The Yankees qualified with their 5-2 victory last night over the Angels in Game 6 of the ALCS.
The first two games of the best of five series will take place in the new Yankee Stadium. Games three, four and if need be, game five being played in Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philly.
If the Fall Classic goes the distance, the last game would be played in New York on Nov. 5.
The Game 1 pitching matchup is a nightmare for fans of the Cleveland Indians as it features the last two American League Cy Young Award winners. CC Sabathia (suh-BATH'-ee-uh) won the award while with the Indians in 2007, while Cliff Lee won the honor last year while playing for Cleveland. Both pitchers were traded in the last year of their contract, Sabathia in 2008 and Lee this past July.

NHL-COYOTES/SALE
Moyes agrees to sell team to league
PHOENIX (AP) -- The NHL is a step closer to taking full control of the Phoenix Coyotes.
Team owner Jerry Moyes has agreed to sell the bankrupt franchise to the league, pending approval by Judge Redfield T. Baum. The deal was announced in U.S. Bankruptcy Court Monday after attorneys met for more than an hour during a recess in a status hearing on the case.
However, former coach Wayne Gretzky has not agreed to the deal. Gretzky has a $22.5 million claim in the case.
Moyes' attorney says the decision to make a deal came largely because the costs of running the team in bankruptcy were coming out of the league's $140-million offer.
