Atlanta Braves general manager John Schuerholz announced the team has signed catcher Brian McCann to a six-year deal.
Schuerholz says it's an unprecedented commitment to a player with less than two full years of major league service.
The contract runs through the 2012 season with an option for 2013.
McCann played minor league baseball with the Mississippi Braves before being called up to Atlanta.
Schuerholz says the contract does not set a trend for the team but is a reflection of McCann's unusual accomplishments so early in his career.
