With the threat of severe weather looming on Saturday, the inaugural Luke Newell Golf Tournament has been postponed.
The senior four-ball tournament, originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Briarwood Country Club, will now take place the weekend of May 5th and 6th.
The tournament is named for the late Luke Newell, who passed away in 1999. He was a long-time fixture at Briarwood. BCC golf pro Rob McGraw says Newell did a lot for both junior golf and the country club.
"I think he was instrumental in getting the senior tees built," he said. "He passed away 7 or 8 years ago and we decided this year to honor him and it will be a yearly event."
Newell's son, Mark, says he grew up at Briarwood, where his dad loved to be.
"He's pretty much a charter member," he said. "It's a big honor for him to have this tournament named after him."
