Mark Goforth hit three RBIs and Aaron Weatherford picked up his first save of the season to lead Mississippi State to a 4-3 win over Tennessee on Friday night.
Mississippi State (23-8, 8-5 SEC) had 13 hits, all for singles. Goforth drove in Jeff Flagg for the first run in the second.
Connor Powers drove in another run in the fifth, followed by two more RBIs from Goforth, to put the Bulldogs up 4-0 in a string of six consecutive hits.
Tennessee (20-14, 6-7) cut it to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Tony Delmonico drove in Andy Simunic from second base and J.P. Arencibia drove in Julio Borbon on a fielder’s choice RBI.
Shawn Griffin followed in the seventh with his first triple for the Volunteers to drive in Danny Lima to make it 4-3.
Weatherford threw two perfect innings with two strikeouts to save Chad Crosswhite (4-1), who allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits.
Vols starter James Adkins (4-5) allowed all 13 hits for four runs with seven strikeouts. Reliever Aaron Everett retired all seven Bulldogs in 2·innings.
The three-game series continues Saturday at 6 p.m.
