The New Orleans Saints have picked up a wide receiver with the 27th overall pick in today's NFL draft, taking Tennessee's Robert Meachem.
Meachem decided to turn pro after a breakout junior season in which he had 71 receptions for nearly 1,300 yards and eleven touchdowns. Before that, he caught 54 passes for 842 yards and six TDs with Tennessee.
Meachem led the team in catches and receiving yards as a sophomore despite making just two starts. He set the Vols' single-season record for receiving yards in 2006 and averaged 17 yards per catch in three years with the Vols.
The 6'2", 214-pound Meachem has great speed and reads coverages very well. He can power off the line and is able to separate in tight coverage. Meachem will fake out corners and can net plenty of yardage after the catch. Although he will make the tough catches, he needs to put himself in better position to grab the ball.
