Southern Miss erased a 3-run deficit with 6 runs in the 7th inning to beat errant UAB 9-5 Wednesday in the first round of the Conference USA baseball tournament.
The Golden Eagles (38-19) trailed 5-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning, when they erupted. The half inning included 3 UAB pitchers, 2 errors, 3 walked batters and 3 hits.
UAB starting pitcher Mitch Kloskowsi struck out the leadoff batter in the 7th, but then walked the next and allowed a single. He was replaced with Brandon Wallace. With a man on first and second, Jody Blount reached on a fielder's choice, and a throwing error scored a run and allowed the man at first to advance to third.
Wallace walked the next 2 batters, scoring a run and loading the bases again. Southern Miss' James Ewing then hit a double, scoring 3 runs. Another pitching change ensued and a final run scored on a second throwing error by the Blazers (25-32), who had 5 errors in the game.
Southern Miss reliever Tyler Conn got the win after starter Ryan Belanger was yanked in the 5th inning. Belanger gave up 5 runs on 6 hits and walked 1. Conn allowed 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3.
