A Southern Miss signee from Lucedale was the first player from Mississippi taken in Thursday's Major League Baseball draft.
Wendell Fairley, who just completed his career at George County High School, was taken by the San Francisco Giants with the 29th overall pick near the end of the first round.
Ferriss Trophy winner Ed Easley, a Mississippi State catcher, was taken with the 61st pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Easley will lead the Bulldogs into its super regional Friday against Clemson.
Ole Miss pitcher Will Kline was taken four picks later at No. 65 by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The right-hander will be the first pitcher sent to the mound in the super regional at Arizona State on Saturday.
And Ole Miss shortstop Zack Cozart was taken by the Cincinnati Reds with the 79th overall pick.
The draft continues Friday and more Mississippi players are expected to be taken.
