Mitch Moreland and Aaron Weatherford combined on four strikeouts and 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as Mississippi State defeated Clemson 8-5 Saturday in a college baseball super regional in Starkville.
The victory puts Mississippi State into the College World Series for the first time since 1998.
The Bulldogs won the super regional with the help of eight doubles and 11 extra-base hits. But they needed Weatherford and Moreland to rescue them from a possible Clemson rally late in the game. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the second inning to take a 5-2 lead they would not give up.
