It was a ground-breaking day in several ways at Lakeview Golf Course.
The First Tee program is now making a home in Meridian. The purpose of the First Tee is to teach young people life skills through the game of golf.
Before now, this type of program existed in every state except Mississippi.
Many people have worked hard over the years to bring the First Tee to Lauderdale County. On Wednesday, the dream became a reality.
"Our board and this community stepped up to the challenge," said Al Willis, with Meridian's First Tee program. "We wanted a First Tee and we didn't see it. Now the day has come and that's what we call perseverance."
"It creates opportunity for children, that's what the first tee is all about," said Southeast Regional Manager Michael Cooper. "We use the game of golf as our platform in a unique life skills and curriculum and to create opportunities for them. I can't think of a better place to be right now. This is great."
