USA Today Honors Boatner

West Lauderdale's Jerry Boatner has received a lot of awards in nearly four decades of coaching baseball. But the latest honor tops them all.

The legendary West Lauderdale skipper has been named the National Baseball Coach of the Year by USA Today newspaper.

Boatner led hate Knights to a 38 and 2 mark this past season and a record 10th state championship.

They also went wire to wire as Mississippi's top rated team and finished second in the country.

The season was bitter-sweet for Boatner. His wife of 38 years, Marsha Joe, died on March 4.

Boatner has 902 wins in 39 years as a head coach. He needs about 160 wins to break the all-time national record.
