Officials from the State Games of Mississippi honored a select group of athletes for displaying the spirit and sportsmanship that the Games promote. 30 people were recognized Saturday night for excelling in their particular sport, while Vicksburg's Andrea Fairchild and Brandon King of Florence were named the Sportsmen of the Year.
Fairchild is currently competing in track and field events in the State Games of America in Colorado. King is a soccer player that was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in April of this year. Participating with his team in the State Games was still extremely important to him though.
The Volunteer of the Year was Drew Freeman of Collinsville. The 13-year-old West Lauderdale student was an easy choice for the award, considering he spent most of his summer contributing to the success of the State Games. Executive Director April Luke said she felt like Freeman was a member of their full-time staff.
