MOBILE, Ala. - Reserve catcher Kody Ortman singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th to lead Auburn to a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Southern Miss here Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The Golden Eagles fell to 8-12, while AU improved to 15-6.
Southern Miss built a 3-0 advantage on the strength of a sacrifice fly by Tim Lynch in the third and then a RBI triple from Nick Dawson in the eighth before scoring one pitch later on a wild pitch.
The Tigers, though, took advantage of a Golden Eagle fielding error to start the bottom of the frame and loaded the bases before Cullen Wacker delivered a bases-clearing double to tie the game at 3-3.
The game remained that way until the 11th when Garrett Cooper drew a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice and an intentional walk as well as a popout to the catcher, Ortman delivered the game-winning blow off USM reliever Cameron Giannini.
USM starter Jake Drehoff limited AU to three hits over seven innings and Cody Livingston who was strong suffered the loss by allowing the winning-run to get on in the 11th.
Conner Frederick improved to 2-0 for Auburn as he retired the last 10 batters he faced after giving up a single to his first batter in the eighth.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they open Conference USA play against Rice. The first game of the series is set for 6 p.m.
