Former East Central Community College basketball standout Kotreece Bender of Newton has returned to her alma mater as an assistant to the recently named Lady Warrior head coach Crandal Porter, former Newton head basketball coach.

Bender, who began her new duties on August 13, 2012, was previously employed by the Newton Municipal School District from 2007-12 and served as girls’ assistant basketball coach for Coach Porter. Her duties included coaching high school basketball and softball, and serving as a physical education instructor. She also tutored several students in geometry and reading at the high school and middle school levels.

As an assistant to Coach Porter, Bender was instrumental in helping lead the Lady Tigers to the 2009-10 State Class 2-A championship. She also served as head basketball coach of the junior high girls’ team and posted a 62-18 record.

Bender was basketball standout at Newton High School and continued her career at ECCC, where she helped lead the Lady Warriors to Region 23, MACJC State and MACJC South Division titles and a second-place finish in the Consolation Bracket of the NJCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship. The Brad Hodge-coached squad also finished eighth in the final NJCAA poll.

Bender received an associate’s degree from ECCC in 2004 and recently earned a bachelor’s degree in Inter Disciplinary Studies at Jackson State University, where she finished in the top 10 percent of her graduating class.
