Cohen a Finalist for National Coaching Award

After guiding Mississippi State to its highest national finish on the diamond, MSU baseball coach John Cohen has been named a finalist for the 2013 National Coach of the Year Award.

The other finalists include Brad Hill (Kansas State), Dan McDonnell (Louisville), Brian O’Connor (Virginia), John Savage (UCLA), Tracy Smith (Indiana), and Rick Vanderhook (Cal State Fullerton). The winner will be announced by the online publication July 3.

Cohen, who won the award in 2006 after guiding Kentucky to the SEC title and an NCAA post-season berth, directed Mississippi State to a 51-20 record and to national runner-up honors in 2013, the school’s highest national finish in athletics.

Along the way the Bulldogs posted a 3-1 mark in the SEC Tournament, hosted and won the NCAA Starkville Regional with a 3-1 record, swept past Virginia in the NCAA Charlottesville (Va.) Super Regional, and then advanced to the Championship Series of the 2013 College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Cohen, in his fifth season, has been associated with three of Mississippi State’s four 50-win campaigns as a player (1989-90) and now as a head coach (2013). has been selecting a national coach of the year since 2003.
