East Central Community College rallied for a 7-3 victory over Mississippi Delta Community College Monday afternoon to capture the best-of-three series and a berth in this week’s MACJC State Baseball Tournament.
The Diamond Warriors, who trailed 3-0 after six innings, exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning thanks to timely hitting and several Delta errors.
EC tied the contest when East Webster High School product Jordan Mixon slapped an RBI single, and took the lead for good at 4-3 when Zach May of Newton County High School was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Three runs came across the plate following bases-loaded walks during the inning. Two other runs were attributed to errors.
Tim Anderson contributed an RBI single during the inning and later scored. Anderson is a product of Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa.
Other hitters were John Morgan Berry of Madison Central and Maxwell Harmon of Enterprise, singles each. Kalik May of Tuscaloosa County was credited with an RBI.
Right-hander Blake Dubuisson picked up the win in relief. Dubuisson fanned a batter and walked one while hurling three scoreless innings. Dubuisson is a product of Long Beach High School. Starter Severino Signa went five innings allowed three earned runs on five hits. He fanned two batters and walked one. Signa is a former standout at Deer Creek High School. Fernando Gonzalez pitched the final inning. He allowed one hit and fanned a batter. Gonzalez is a Puerto Rico native.
The Diamond Warriors, who improved to 28-19 under head coach Neal Holliman, claimed a 5-2 decision in the series opener Sunday night.
Delta finishes at 26-21 under head coach Michael Avalon, a former Diamond Warrior assistant.
The MACJC State Baseball Tournament is scheduled May 9-11 at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville.
