Set to make their 2013-14 home season debut, the East Mississippi Community College basketball teams will play host to nearby foe East Central Community College Thursday evening on the Scooba campus. A 5:30 p.m. women’s game will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men’s contest at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.

Coach Mark White’s preseason 11th-ranked EMCC Lions claimed an 82-76 road victory over rival Meridian Community College last Thursday to tip off their new season. Devonta Pollard, a former McDonald’s All-American from Kemper County High School, paced a quartet of double-figure scorers for the Lions with 19 points against the MCC Eagles.

The EMCC women, under the direction of Sharon Thompson, are 2-1 on the young season after dropping a 57-52 road decision to Meridian CC a week ago. Prior to that setback, the Lady Lions cruised to easy neutral-site victories over San Jacinto [TX] College (70-46) and Houston [TX] CC (66-36), Nov. 1-2, at the Lady Bear Classic hosted by Baton Rouge Community College.

East Central Community College comes to Scooba sporting records of 3-1 (women) and 2-2 (men) after splitting Monday’s doubleheader at Holmes Community College. Coach Crandal Porter’s Lady Warriors have beaten Holmes twice (81-79 & 76-63) as well as Coahoma (64-44) for their three wins thus far while losing to Mississippi Delta (85-77). Coach Robert Thompson’s Warriors have sandwiched wins over Coahoma (61-53) and Mississippi Delta (77-72) between a pair of setbacks against Holmes (78-68 & 68-65).

After sweeping the Warriors last season (82-72 in Decatur and 91-75 in Scooba), the EMCC men own a current 11-game series winning streak against East Central spanning back to the 2008-09 season. The EMCC Lady Lions have prevailed in four of the last five hardwood meetings with the Lady Warriors, with the ECCC women winning 49-41 in Decatur and EMCC returning the favor 67-60 in Scooba to split last year’s season series.
