With his current string of three consecutive complete-game victories, East Mississippi Community College’s Smokey Ethridge has been named the MACJC Pitcher of the Week for his most recent performance.
A sophomore right-hander, Ethridge raised his season record to 5-1 and career mark to 11-3 by going the distance in EMCC’s 6-2 road win over Mississippi Delta Community College this past Saturday in Moorhead. He scattered seven hits and allowed two unearned runs over seven innings against the Trojans while striking out two and not issuing a walk.
Over his last three starts, including complete-game wins over Northwest Mississippi Community College and Itawamba Community College, Ethridge has surrendered a total of just five runs, with 12 strikeouts and only two walks, during that 22-inning stretch.
For the season, Ethridge has been the ace of EMCC’s pitching staff with a 5-1 record and 2.63 earned run average. In nine starts on the mound this year, the former West Lauderdale High School standout has given up just 52 hits, with 29 strikeouts and only 14 walks, in 54.2 total innings of work for the Lions. The Collinsville native also owns four complete games on the year.
Battling for a playoff spot within the MACJC’s North Division, head coach Chris Rose’s 17-21 EMCC Lions, 7-11 within the division, close out their 2013 regular-season home baseball schedule by playing host to Holmes Community College in a critical Wednesday doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m. at Gerald Poole Field on the Scooba campus.
