No one familiar with Meridian Community College soccer was surprised when freshman forward Meme Huff scored the winning goal in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Gulf Coast. It was her second of the day and 10th in MCC's last four games. With 15 total, she's closing in on the school's season record of 27.
"I'm very surprised with how it is now," says Huff. "I'm a really competitive person, just naturally, so I guess it's always in the back of my head."
The former Meridian Wildcat -who just so happens to be a triplet- signed with MCC last February over four-year universities such as West Alabama, the University of Mobile, and Jacksonville State. Now, she's the feature weapon for the 8-0 Eagles.
"Talking with the team and like... hanging out with them and then getting to watch them on the field convinced me this is where I'm supposed to be."
Meme is very humble. She quickly points out that her defenders often cover her mistakes and that she is surrounded by great teammates. One of those, Kayla Phillips leads the nation with 11 assists.
"Kayla's really good about feeding the ball to me," says Huff. "But before that happens, Merrick (Watkins) normally feeds it to Kayla, and Kayla places it perfectly to where I can just like... finish."
Huff's decision to go to MCC benefiting everyone. Her goal of playing soccer in the Southeastern Conference is more attainable now, and the Eagles are in a position to achieve greater glory.
"As a team, we're definitely looking for a state championship and then maybe to go on and get a national championship. Because the men's side has one, but it'd be great to have one for the women's side."
