The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles entered play Thursday night looking to take control of the top spot in the MACJC South Division, but things didn't go as planned for the green and white.
Pearl River scored a 72-66 home victory over the Lady Eagles to take sole possession of first place in the South Division. MCC not only fell back in the standings after the loss to PRCC Thursday, but now the Lady Eagles find themselves in a tight race among three other teams in the division.
Southwest defeated Hinds Thursday night by a final score of 66-45, while Jones defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast by a final of 65-61 to create a log jam in the division race. Southwest, Jones, and Meridian all now hold an 8-4 division record after play Thursday night. Pearl River is sitting in the top spot with a 9-2 league mark, while Co-Lin kept its postseason hopes alive with a 73-66 victory over East Central. The Lady Wolves are still mathematically in the hunt for the postseason with a 7-5 South Division record.
MCC dropped its overall record to 16-5 for the 2013-2014 season after the road loss, while Pearl River moved its overall record to 15-3.
Kristin Sampson led the way in scoring for the Lady Eagles with 23 points, while Victoria Stewart added 20 points in the loss.
Shanta Echols led the way for Pearl River with 22 points and 18 rebounds in the victory, while Deantra Darjean had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The MCC men also fell Thursday night by a final score of 65-43. The Eagles are now 5-16 overall for the season and 4-8 in league play, while the Pearl River men improved to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in division play.
MCC will return to action this Monday night in its final regular season road games for the season at Mississippi Gulf Coast. The women will take to the floor at 6:00 and the men to follow at 8:00.
MCC will then close out the 2013-2014 regular season next Thursday night (February 20) for a homecoming doubleheader at the Graham Gymnasium against Southwest Mississippi. The women will play at 5:30 and the men will follow at 7:30.
