HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Larry "Doc" Harrington, the longtime athletic trainer and tennis coach at the University of Southern Mississippi, has died. He was 81.
The university says Harrington died Saturday after a long illness. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hattiesburg. Burial will be Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg.
Harrington was not only USM's athletic trainer, he was the equipment manager and a highly successful tennis coach from 1961 until 1987. He also was a trainer on several U.S. Olympic teams and for 25 years in the Senior Bowl.
He also helped establish an athletic trainers certification program at USM
Harrington was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association in 1987. Last summer, he was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
