The Meridian Community College golf team qualified for the Division I National Championship by finishing strong during the NJCAA District Five Tournament held in Pendleton, SC. Going into the third and final round the Eagles needed to make up at least four strokes to qualify. Led by sophomore TJ Morgan, they not only made up the four, but shot the low round of the day and jumped two teams.
National powerhouses Brevard (FL) Community College and Central Alabama Community College finished first and second respectively.
"District Five is very strong this year so we are thrilled to qualify" said MCC head coach Ronnie Key, "Especially to perform well when the pressure was on was sweet. We have struggled during third rounds this year, but to put up the best team round of the day shows the character of this team."
TJ Morgan led the scoring by shooting a two under 69. To make that even more impressive, he had two doubles but fought back with an eagle and four birdies. Chase Taylor finished the round with a 73 and Dallas Shepard shot a 74. Rounding out the scoring was Nathan Kirkland with a 74 and Austin Sparks with a 78.
The National Tournament will be held on the Texas Tech golf course in Lubbock, TX on May 14-17.
