The Mississippi State football team officially reports for 2014 preseason camp Wednesday morning as sixth-year head coach Dan Mullen will welcome 105 players to campus with the start of practice set for the following day.

The Bulldogs return 18 starters (eight offense, nine defense, one special teams) and a total of 57 letterwinners from a squad that won the final three games of the 2013 season en route to Egg Bowl and Liberty Bowl victories. It was the first three-game winning streak to close a season at MSU since 1974.

Among the 105 players set to report, 30 started at least one game last season. The experienced group is led by quarterback Dak Prescott, who was voted preseason second-team All-Southeastern Conference by the league’s media earlier this month. The Bulldogs also bring back seven of their nine leading tacklers from a year ago, including linebacker Benardrick McKinney.

“We have 30 guys that started games last year returning this year,” said Mullen. “Due to all the injuries we suffered throughout last season, our guys overcame that adversity and found a way to win games. To have all those guys come back that have played in a lot of big games is pretty special.”

Wednesday’s schedule calls for an 8 a.m. team orientation before afternoon positional meetings. MSU hits the practice field at the Seal Complex the following afternoon at 5 p.m. It will be the Bulldogs’ first taste of the new grass fields that were installed earlier this summer.

The first two practices call for shorts and helmets. MSU goes full pads for Monday afternoon’s practice. All practices and scrimmages during preseason camp are closed to the public.

The Bulldogs begin their 115th season of football on Saturday, Aug. 30 when they welcome in-state foe Southern Miss to Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field for a 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff on the new SEC Network.
