Mississippi State redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Ben Bracewell will start Tuesday’s game against Mount St. Mary’s, head coach John Cohen announced Monday. Wednesday’s starter is still to be determined. First pitch at Dudy Noble Field is 4 p.m. for both games in the series.
Tuesday will feature “Faith and Family Night” at the ballpark, with “The Outlet” worship service in the Palmeiro Center taking place after the game. Tickets for Tuesday’s baseball game are $2 and can be purchased at HailState.com/tickets. For Wednesday’s game, fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs and $2 popcorn at concessions.
Following a 2-2 series split with defending Patriot League regular-season champion Holy Cross, the Bulldogs dropped in all four major polls released Monday. State slid from fifth to 10th in the Perfect Game Top-25, seventh to 18th in Baseball America’s rankings, second to 18th in Collegiate Baseball’s Top-30 and seventh to 15th in the weekly vote by the NCBWA.
Juniors Wes Rea and Jake Vickerson stood out for the Maroon and White this past weekend against the Crusaders. Rea slugged at a .938 clip, belting three home runs and driving in nine on a 6-for-16 weekend (.375). Vickerson filled up the box score as well, tallying seven hits, five runs, four walks, three stolen bases, two doubles and two RBIs in four starts. The outfielder hit .500 and finished the weekend with a .611 on-base percentage out of the leadoff spot.
Bracewell, who recorded his first career quality start this past Wednesday with a career-high seven strikeouts vs. Memphis, enters the game with a flawless 0.00 ERA. The senior will be opposed by Mount St. Mary’s righty Kevin Myers, who is making his 2014 debut. Myers went 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 28.0 innings his freshman campaign. Wednesday’s starter for the Mount has yet to be announced.
