Livingston, Ala. Well over 100 kids showed up for the Marcus Campbell Basketball Camp in Sumter County. There were so many kids that the camp had to split up between two different schools.

This was the 14th year of the camp that not only teaches kids the fundamentals of playing the game of basketball, but important life skills that they will take with them into the future.

Marcus Campbell says, "This is very important. Not only is this camp teaching basketball fundamentals; we are teaching life skills. The beauty of it is, in order to be a productive citizen in life you have to have character, respect to be able to do what you need to do."

In addition to being coached by area basketball coaches, the kids had the opportunity to receive coaching from retired NBA all-star Charles Oakley who has old ties to the camp.

Charles Oakley, Campbell’s cousin, says "We grew up together; he has been doing the camp for years. I started this camp about 14 years ago and he's doing one now. I've been doing camps this summer in New York, so I’m always giving back to the kids. I always want to see the kids do well."

Oakley said he believes very strongly that giving time back to the kids is one of the most important things he can do.

"I think kids are the future. I think they need all the celebrities, and all they people who can give time to them," says Oakley. "They need that in order for the world to be a better place."

Campbell was thrilled his cousin could be here for the camp and hopes that being coached by a retired NBA all-star will have a lasting impact in the lives of the kids.

Campbell says, "It’s awesome; it's awesome. It's something you need to grab hold of and let it all soak in. So I’m hoping the young kids will listen and pay attention to what he's saying to them."
