East Mississippi competitors dominated in the Martial Arts competition at the 2013 State Games of Mississippi. One of the 37 sporting events of the 22nd Annual State Games, the competition was held at Meridian Community College over the weekend.
In the women’s Novice Kobudo, Lisa Seeger of Waynesboro picked up a Gold medal and the Silver medals in Kata and Kumite division for the 19-39 age bracket. Also from Waynesboro, 8-year-old Braiden Yarber earned the Gold in Beginner’s Kobudo and Kata. Yarber won the Silver medal in Weapons, succeeding to Will Harris from Quitman for the Gold. In the Boy’s Novice division, 9-year-old Steven Beckman from Pachuta won the Gold medals in Kobudo and Kata and the Silver in Kumite.
In the Men’s 13-15 Beginner’s competition, Meridian rsident Grant Goodman earned the Gold medals in Kata and Kumite, while Harrison Davis of Collinsville, took home the Gold in Kata Novice.
This was a banner year for the Martial Arts tournament! The amount of participants and spectators nearly doubled as to what it has been in the past. This is the second year commissioners Mike Ivey and Craig Beeding have led the event and they look forward to next year!
