The Northeast Lauderdale baseball team celebrated the signing ceremony of senior pitcher Ben Smith Thursday afternoon on the school's campus.
Smith signed to play baseball for East Mississippi Community College this Fall. He says he picked the Lions because they value the team over the individual. He also says he keeps a relationship with current Lion outfielder and his Former Trojan teammate Blake Key.
"I really like the way they're doing their program up there," said Smith. "They're doing it a lot like they're changing things down here. They haven't really been known as a baseball school, but they're doing things differently. They're letting everybody know that they're real when it comes to baseball."
Smith is already off to a 3-1 start for the 7-2 Trojans. On Tuesday, he threw a complete game, 2-hit shutout in Northeast's 4-0 victory over Quitman.
"Now when they get off the field, he's such a leader and every guy on the team looks up to him," said Head Baseball Coach Josh Snyder. "That's what's going to hurt the most: losing him in those kind of apsects."
