OXFORD, Miss. – The Rebels got off to a hot start on Wednesday, pushing four runs home in the first inning on the way to victory as No. 16 Ole Miss (22-8) defeated UAPB (8-20) by a score of 11-1 at Swayze Field.
The Rebels scored the 11 runs on 11 hits, including the first home run of the season from freshman J.B. Woodman, as the Ole Miss offense came alive before a weekend series against the Auburn Tigers.
Evan Anderson (1-0) picked up the win for the Rebels, working on a predetermined pitch count. Anderson allowed one hit with a strikeout in 3.2 innings of work. He was one of six pitchers to see action on the afternoon for the Rebels, including the first outing of the season for left-hander Scott Ashford.
Kyle Schwartz (2-4) took the loss for the Lions, allowing four runs – two earned – on three hits with a walk in his 1.0 inning of work.
Ole Miss got off to the quick start, pushing four runs across the plate in the first inning by capitalizing on an error by UAPB and stringing together three hits. Braxton Lee started things off with a walk and a stolen base before a throwing error by the Lions pitcher on a ground ball from Bousfield allowed Lee to score and Bousfield to go to second. Austin Anderson then delivered an RBI double to right before a single from Will Allen put two men on. Sikes Orvis came up with an RBI single up the middle for the third run and Allen scored a batter later when John Gatlin hit into a double play.
The Rebels led 4-0 after the first.
Ole Miss brought three more runs home in the third inning to take the lead out to 7-0. Anderson and Allen opened things with a single and a double before Orvis again came up with an RBI hit, this time driving the ball to the wall in right to bring two runs home on his double. A wild pitch moved Orvis to third and he then scored on a groundout from Gatlin to cap the inning.
A single run in the fourth on a fielder’s choice from Austin Anderson scored Errol Robinson as Ole Miss took the lead out to eight runs.
UAPB got on the board in the fifth, using a walk and a throwing error from the pitcher on a ground ball back up the middle to get a man into scoring position. Mike Wieland reached on the walk and went first to third on the ground ball up the middle from Mitch Bruckshaw that resulted in a throwing error as the Rebels tried to get Wieland out at second. A fielder’s choice to second from Rashawn Tillman brought Wieland home and the Rebels’ lead was cut to 8-1.
Ole Miss answered again in the home half of the inning, getting its first of three runs on the solo shot to right from Woodman as part of a two-out rally. The Rebels then loaded the bases on an Austin Knight single and back-to-back hit batters before Auston Bousfield would drive a ball back through the left side to bring home two more runs and take the lead out to 11-1.
The score stayed fixed from there with Ole Miss holding on to the 10-run advantage down the stretch as both bullpens kept things in check through the final 3.5 innings.
The Rebels will return to action this weekend with a three-game series against the Auburn Tigers. Friday’s series opener begins at 6:30 p.m., while Saturday’s contest is slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch. Sunday’s series finale is set for a 1:30 p.m. in a game televised by CSS.
