LOUISVILLE (AP) -- Orb has won the 139th Kentucky Derby with a perfect trip over a muddy track at Churchill Downs.
It's the first Kentucky Derby victory for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey and rising star jockey Joel Rosario.
"It means everything to me," McGaughey said immediately after the race. "I've already dreamed of this."
Orb was co-favorite and went off at 5-to-1. He paid $12.80 for a two-dollar bet.
Orb broke 15th at the start and Rosario avoided the mass rush to the first turn. He was near the back of the 19-horse field on the backstretch but was steadily passing horses. Orb passed Normandy Invasion at the top of the stretch and took the lead inside the eighth pole. His winning margin was two and a-half lengths.
Longshot Golden Soul was second with Revolutionary third.
