The Meridian Community College athletic department held a signing ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Castell Gallery on campus with five baseball players and one basketball player inking scholarships.
MCC head baseball coach Dillon Sudduth announced that six current MCC players are signing scholarships to move to the next level. Sophomores Brandon Smith, Charles Morton, Witt Haggard, Alvin Franklin, and Tanner Vandevere all signed with four-year schools Thursday afternoon.
Smith signed a scholarship to play next season for Northwestern State University for head coach Lane Burroughs. Smith complied a 3.92 ERA this season for the Eagles and collected 40 strikeouts in 57 innings of work. Smith will also rejoin former MCC head coach Chris Curry, who currently serves as an assistant coach on the staff at Northwestern State University.
Morton and Vandevere each inked scholarships with Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA. Morton finished the 2013 regular season with a .338 batting average and led the team in RBI’s with 32. Vandevere ended the regular season by batting .289 with 19 runs scored, and 15 RBI’s.
Franklin inked a scholarship to play in the SWAC next season at Jackson State University. Franklin wrapped up the 2013 season by hitting .250 with eight runs scored and eight RBI’s.
Haggard also decided to stay in the state of Mississippi and signed a scholarship with Delta State University. The former Lamar School standout has primarily been used out of the MCC bullpen this season. Haggard finished the regular season campaign with 26 strikeouts in 38 innings of work for the Eagles.
The MCC women’s basketball team also announced that one player has inked a scholarship to move to the next level for 2013-2014. MCC head women’s basketball coach Joceyln McGilberry announced that Keionna Gines has signed a track scholarship with William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS.
Gines was a member of the MCC women’s basketball team this past season and helped the Lady Eagles make an appearance in the 2013 Region 23 Tournament.
