HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Quarterback Anthony Alford has left Southern Mississippi after one season.
Southern Miss athletic director Jeff Hammond announced Thursday in a statement that Alford had requested a release from his scholarship and the school has complied.
Alford played in nine games for the winless Golden Eagles this season, starting five. He led the team with 664 passing yards and also rushed for 329 yards and six touchdowns.
But his future was uncertain after he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault by university police following a fight on campus earlier this month.
The Petal, Miss., native is also a promising baseball prospect. He was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays after being drafted in the third round last June, but the organization allowed him to also play college football.
