If you pick up the most recent issue of Sports Illustrated, you'll notice the magazine's feature story is that of Meridian native Brian Cole. It was 12 years ago this month that Cole, a football and baseball sensation at Meridian High School, tragically died in a car accident while driving from Port St. Lucie, FL to Meridian.
The article, titled "The Best Player You Never Saw" tells the story of Cole's incredible athletic ability from Meridian to Major League Baseball through the words of his teammates.
The New York Mets drafted him in 1998 at just 5'8" 160 pounds. Regardless, he hit with remarkable power: 42 home runs, 193 RBI's and 135 stolen bases during his time in the Mets' organization.
The story is written by Michael McKnight.
