Meridian, MS.- The Opening Ceremonies of the twentieth Annual State Games of Mississippi will be held in downtown Meridian on Friday, June 17. Patterned after the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, the event will feature thousands of Mississippi Athletes representing more than 375communities. The athletes will march through the streets of downtown in the Parade of Athletes, showing off their team, community and spirit. Coca-Cola, a "Founding Gold Sponsor" is the sponsor of the Opening Ceremonies.
As the athletes ready themselves for the parade, spectators will enjoy an abundance of family-friendly entertainment, including live music from "The Slackers", a variety of inflatables, midway games, various vendors, and more. In celebration of the twentieth anniversary, there will also be a live "extreme" BMX bike show, performed by the world famous Rise Above BMX troupe.
As the show begins, the athletes will walk across the stage and participate in the "Spirit Competition", where they will be judged on costumes, enthusiasm, and team spirit. A special appearance will be made by former U.S. Olympians, Mildrette Netter-White and George Wilson, who will administer the "Athlete Oath" and a special welcome will also be made by statewide dignitaries.
As dark approaches, 2010 AT&T State Games of Mississippi Athletes of the Year Jaycee Tudor and Scott Gray III, will bring in the State Games torch for a fabulous pyrotechnic torch-lighting. The evening will end with an explosion of fireworks, signaling the "opening" of the State Games.
