Meridian, Miss. Swimming lessons returned to the pool at Meridian's Velma Young Park Monday.
In fact, the city says swimming lessons haven't been offered there for 30 years.
Mayor Percy Bland says 60% to 70 % of children who are considered at-risk also don't know how to swim. He says it is a safety issue, but there are other benefits of knowing how to swim.
"And also self-confidence and self-esteem. But the main thing is we're trying to create an atmosphere so kids are not fearful to swim and fearful of water so they'll have the skill of swimming," said Bland. "So that if they're ever somewhere and they need to be able to swim, they can do that."
Lessons are being taught through Thursday at the pool at Velma Young Park. There are two classes: 9-9:45 a.m. and 10-10:45 a.m.
