DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers have won the American League pennant and are going to the World Series for the 11th time in team history -- and first since 2006
The Tigers finished a sweep of the punchless New York Yankees with an 8-1 trouncing in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series.
Miguel Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta both hit two-run home runs in the fourth inning as the Tigers took command early. Peralta and Austin Jackson added solo homers later in the rout. Yankees starter CC Sabathia was hit hard by the Tigers giving up two home runs and six runs in three and two-thirds innings of work.
Tigers starter Max Scherzer lost a no-hit bid in the sixth inning. He struck out 10 in his five and two-thirds innings. Scherzer and three relievers combined on a two-hitter.
The Tigers will get some rest before the World Series. The Fall Classic opens next Wednesday night in either St. Louis or San Francisco.
