Drehoff and Two USM Signees Drafted

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - One current Southern Miss player and two 2014 Golden Eagle signees were chosen in the final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday.

The Boston Red Sox selected left-handed pitcher Jake Drehoff (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the 12th round with the 353rd overall pick. Drehoff, who completed his redshirt sophomore season for the Golden Eagles this spring, posted a 5-5 record with a 3.54 earned run average in 15 starts. He fanned 69 and walked 30 in 81 1/3 innings. Drehoff won his last three starts for the Golden Eagles in 2013.

The Golden Eagles also had a couple of signees for next season taken from Pearl River Community College taken. Brandon Fry, a left-handed pitcher from Jacksonville, Fla., and right-handed pitcher Christian Talley from Diamondhead, Miss.

The San Diego Padres chose Fry in the 18th round (538th pick) after a season in which he was a All-MACJC second team pick, finishing his sophomore campaign with a 5-0 record, with 51 strikeouts in 48.2 innings to go along with a team-best 2.40 ERA.

The Tampa Bay Rays picked Talley in the 26th round (788th pick) after he finished 9-5 record to earned first-team All-MACJC honors. Talley was a two-time MACJC and NJCAA Player of the Week this spring and fanned a team-high 92 and walked just 15 in 92 2/3 innings, while boasting a 2.62 ERA.

Another Southern Miss pitcher, righthander Andrew Pierce, got selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth round on Friday.
